World of Nerds: Harry Potter. Books? Or Films?

World of Nerds: Harry Potter. Books? Or Films?

I have never met a person who has not read, seen or at least heard of the Harry Potter franchise. The series was written by Joanne. K. Rowling in a coffee shop in Edinburgh. She said that "Harry walked into my head fully formed while I took the train into Kings Cross in London." Lets see which out of the two were better.

Books

The very first Harry Potter book, was released to the British public in 1997. Rowling had been working on it for a year and her plans and original drawings are now being shown in the British Library in London. The stories follow Harry, a wizard who is sent to his school at age eleven. There he meets his two friends Ron and Hermione and they end up fighting against He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named (Moldywart). The books add in a lot more detail than the films. for example they left out Moldywart's entire family history with the Gaunt Family. Oh no it's fine, it's not like anyone who has read the books multiple times will notice.

Films

The first Harry Potter film was officially released in 2001. It starred child actors; Daniel Radcliff, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson. It also starred Maggie Smith as Professor McGonagall and Imelda Staunton as Professor Umbridge. It was directed by; Chris Columbus (1-2), Alfonso CuarĂ³n (3), Mike Newell (4) and David Yates (5-8). The films were less detailed than the books were, and they did stick to the original plot but, again, it's annoying that they didn't put in aspects of the books that seemed to be important. The director of the films changes as much as the writers and Conductors for the music. The original music was written by John Williams.
Also, is it just me or does Harry Potter in the movies seem to be a bit more of a Gary Stu than in the books? Or is it just me? Also who else here loves Snape as a character? I personally think he's one of the most complex characters in the series. But that's just me, why don't you leave a comment of who your favourite character is.

Books vs Films

So, here comes the facts. Most of the people who read Harry Potter would agree that the books are the best as they are the originals, the Films were made to bring the Wizarding world to life. Others did not read the books and watched the films first so they would obviously say the films are the best.
The most distinct things that were not included/changed in the movies were:
  • Dumbledore was way more aggressive to Harry in the GOF
  • Pettigrew's silver hand had some use in the book not in the film
  • Ghosts were used more in the books
  • Harry's eyes were not green they were blue
  • We didn't get to see Neville's parents which was annoying
  • We didn't get any closure to what happened to Lockhart or Umbridge
  • Neville was portrayed as a hot guy in the film (Positive change)
  • S.P.E.W was not in the films at all (Hermione just ran after boys)
  • The prophecy in the film did not mention that Neville could also be the "Chosen one."
  • Ginny was way more independent in the books
So technically the books are better as they add more depth to the characters and the plotline.

World of Nerds: Star Wars

World of Nerds: Star Wars

Alright, post number three, which in this case, if we were in the star wars universe I would call it "Revenge of the Sith" but I'm not going to go near that hell hole of a film. So, about a month ago, the new Star wars came out, The Last Jedi. And honestly, I wasn't that happy with it. Really, I don't like any of the new films.
Yes they are better quality, better graphics, but that's what makes the first three so good, it looks like a Sci-Fi film. The originals and prequels were made by George Lucas but the new ones are being done by people from Disney with Lucas acting as a creative consultant.

Episodes I-III

Episodes one to three all tell about the life of Anakin Skywalker before Luke Skywalker comes into play. It brings to light new characters and a new depth to the character of Darth Vader. The Prequels came out during the times of 1999 - 2005. Meaning that the CGI technology was way better.
But not everyone liked the Prequels, some were still in love with the originals.

Episodes IV-VI

These were the first three Star wars films to be released. They portray the timeline of when Luke Skywalker, son of Anakin and Padme, learns of his heritage as a Jedi. He then works together with the resistance to rid the world of the tyrant that is Darth Vader. The original trilogy ran from 1977-1983 and was created by George Lucas.

New Trilogy

The Star Wars franchise returned in December of 2015. It entails the time of the First Order's creation of a new machine that looks awfully like the Death Star. It brings to light new characters like Rey and Finn and Kylo Ren who turns out to be (spoilers) Leia and Han Solo's son, and ultimately the grandson of Darth Vader. The new trilogy was not made by George but he was a creative consultant during the filming.

What is to come?

The new trilogy still have one more film to make before they can wrap up. But, the Star Wars universe isn't finished with yet. Apparently, there is to be another trilogy and new Anthology films on the way. Also, Star Wars Rebels, which is a cartoon shown on Disney XD, are coming back for their final episodes in February, so, be very excited for the next few films.

Look down there

World of Nerds: DC vs Marvel

World of Nerds: DC vs Marvel

Alright, so, most people who aren't nerds know about at least one of these, or even both. But, do you know of both of them in such detail, you would be able to tell your nerdy acquaintance, or friend, how, when and by who they were made. Well, sit down my children, it's story time with Charlie.

Marvel

Marvel Wikipedia
I love Marvel, please DC lovers don't kill me, I love DC too, but I love the characters that were created by the writers; Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. It didn't start as Marvel though. In 1939, a company called Timely Publications was founded. It would later become Atlas Comics in the early 1950s. The Marvel branding officially began in 1961 which is the year they released the Fantastic Four and other titles written by the three men mentioned up the top. Most of you will know the most famous superheroes created for the Marvel franchise; Spider-man, Captain America, Iron Man etc.
Most of these superheroes are based in America, apart from the Black Panther who is based in the fictional country of Wakanda, which is placed in the North East of Africa. The other superheroes are placed in different parts of America, most in New York. For example, Spider-man lives in Queens in New York, and Captain America lives in Brooklyn in New York. Ok don't get me wrong but I think someone out there should create a petition for a new Marvel superhero to be born/set in a European country. Just to give it a bit of difference.

DC

Ok now onto DC.

DC Wikipedia
DC comics is part of the DC entertainment company which is related to Warner Brothers Entertainment. It has created many superheroes over the years and it was created in 1937 by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson. Most of the heroes you would know either from reading the comics or seeing the most recent films. (Which I will not mention)
The two most well known DC heroes are Superman and Batman, both of whom have had many remakes in the film industry. Batman has had 9 actors play him and many TV shows and films through the years. Superman has had 9 films and has reappeared in many TV shows and cartoons.

Marvel VS DC

Ok, with the films (Exception with the new Wonder woman), in my opinion Marvel far overthrows DC by miles. And not just because they are under Disney. They usually have a better plotline and purpose for the villain's, and better fighting scenes. Marvel also links all of their movies together way better than DC. But the same can't be said about Marvel comics. According to the readers of the comics, DC is better in style and art, but it usually is a 50:50 split.

In conclusion, it's really your opinion. Whether you prefer DC to Marvel or vice versa, that's fine, but, I would warn you this. . .
Don't mix the two up if there's a nerdy nearby.

World of Nerds: Video Games

World of Nerds: Video games

OK, so every nerd knows about one type of console or the other, and the same could be said for games. But, do you know the history of the game/console that you own? Say for example, where it was made, who made it, who paid for it and who developed it? Alright then, lets start with a well known console. I'll be talking about three; Nintendo, PS4 and a PC.

Nintendo

Alright, so, everyone under the sun knows about this company. they created consoles like the DS the Wii and made games such as Mario Cart and Legend of Zelda among many others. But, do you know when it was made? The company itself was founded in 1889 by a man called Fusajiro Yamauchi. It was originally a company that was created to make and sell hanafuda playing cards. Nintendo's first world wide success came in the form of Game & Watch, a handheld device made in 1980. They then moved on to their other devices. The Nintendo DS and the Wii first made an appearance in 2004 which then became Nintendo's forth man held system. Yeah I know I missed around 24 years but I don't really want to bore you with a history lesson. New Super Mario Bros was released with the new Nintendo DS Lite in early 2006.
In the later half of 2006 Nintendo released the Wii console which would then evolve to the WiiU and other consoles. The Wii came to become the bestselling home console in the seventh generation. And, with the release of the Nintendo switch last year, Nintendo are still going strong, and will be for the next few years I bet.

PlayStation

OK, next company and console is the PlayStation. PlayStation is developed and made
by Sony Computer Entertainment. The original console was released in late 1994. It was made due to the contract between Nintendo and Sony and it's most recent console was released in 2013 being named the PlayStation 4. Most of the games made for PS4 are well known and you might've seen YouTubers play multiple of them. An example of one would be Markiplier playing Until Dawn, which I would recommend to anyone who has a PS4 to play it.

PC

A PC game is a game that is played on your laptop at home. You can download the content using many apps and websites. But, I'd recommend using Steam as it has the best prices. So,  what is a PC game? That's an easy question. A PC game is one that can be easily played and downloaded onto your laptop. It can be any game like say; Five Nights at Freddy's, or Call of Duty or, the worlds grossing PC game yet, League of Legends. These games can range from anything, from horror to slice of life, the only limit is your debit card amount.

Games; Five Night's at Freddy's

Alright, to finish up this post, I'm going to talk about one of my all time favourite games to play. Five Night's at Freddy's first made its appearance in August 2014. It was developed by a man called Scot Cawthon and has since had six other games after it, most of these were sequels. It is a horror game that puts you, the player in the shoes of a nigh guard at a pizzeria named Freddy Fazbear's pizza. You must survive till 6 am without having the power die or the animatronics kill you. You don't move through out the game but only look around to shut the doors and turn on lights and work the cameras to check on the animatronics; Bonnie, Chica, Freddy and Foxy. It is a really immersive game and I'd recommend playing it with a friend, or in a room with your pet with the lights on.
